The Oxford online dictionary defines Intimacy as follows;
1. Close familiarity or friendship.
e.g.‘the intimacy between a husband and wife’
2. A cosy and private or relaxed atmosphere.
e.g. ‘the room had a peaceful sense of intimacy about it’
3. euphemistic Sexual intercourse.
4. count noun An intimate remark. e.g. ‘here she was sitting swapping intimacies with a stranger’
5. singular Closeness of observation or knowledge of a subject. e.g. ‘he acquired an intimacy with Swahili literature’

This past week “Wacha niKwambie” blog examined the subject of “Sex and Intimacy”. The same cannot be discussed without a connection to Relationships and Intimacy. For one to have a fully wholesome and enjoyable sexual experience with ones partner one must strive for familiarity and friendship with ones partner. Worth noting is that Sex and Intimacy are not one and the same thing. The two can coexist without each other. However, for a fulfilling sexual relationship; Intimacy must prelude sex. Considering so many things that beg for our attention in this day and age; parenting, extended family, careers, work, businesses, social engagements and friendships – are we setting ample time with our partners as a build up to a fulfilling sexual relationship?
