SETTING GOALS

STEP 1: DECIDE WHAT YOU REALLY WANT

All success starts with knowing what it is you want to be, have or do.

What is it that YOU want?

To lose weight? Travel the world? Write a book?

To earn more money? Be happy? Improve your business?

Whatever it is, your starting point is to identify it!

But what if you are not sure?

If you are not sure about what you want, get yourself a pen and paper and put some time aside to do an overall assessment of your life. This will give you a clearer handle on how your life looks right now and what needs to change.

If your life isn’t how you want it to be don’t worry – that’s true for most of us. Just set some more quality thinking time aside, begin the process of change and create an alternative and exciting vision for your future.

When you have taken both of these steps, you will have a much clearer idea about what it is that you really want for your life and will be raring to go!

STEP 2: SET A CLEAR GOAL AND WRITE IT DOWN

Once you know what you want, your next step is to transform what you want into a crystal clear goal.

Your goals should be SMART goals; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time bound.

They should be to the point, should have a scale of weighing success, they should not be set so high that they are notattainable and they should have deadlines.

STEP 3: GET YOUR UNCONSCIOUS MIND ON BOARD

You must saturate BOTH your conscious mind and your unconscious mind with a clear picture of what it is you want to achieve – and you must keep that picture in mind every day!

Have positive affirmations about what you plan to achieve, read inspirational books, watch motivational movies about the same, try and emulate those who have achieved what you want to achieve.

STEP 4: MAKE A PLAN TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS AND TAKE ACTION

The biggest challenge that many of us have is stopping at the point of setting our goals but not going the next step to achieve them.

After one has identified the goals one wishes to achieve, one should then make a plan of execution and take actions to achieve them.

Every day, every week, every month and possibly every year should move one closer to achieving ones dreams.

Remember if ones goals made had been SMART that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound , it makes it relatively easy to make a plan of execution. If on the other hand ones goals were hazy it becomes relatively difficult to achieve them.

STEP 5: KEEP LEARNING AND CHANGE AS REQUIRED
As one embarks on the journey to achieving ones goals, one may end up achieving ones goals faster than one anticipated or on the other hand one may face challenges and difficulties in achieving ones goals. One should be flexible and wise enough to realize when ones goals need to change with time, change the game plan or change oneself as one needed.

Tomorrow, we close this topic on setting goals by looking at some mistakes people make when setting goals and ways to keep one motivated on achieving ones goals.
