The free online dictionary gives one of the definitions of the idiom “Give Back” as;

“To act in a charitable manner, often by donating money or volunteering.e.g. “I like to give back to my community by working with other volunteers to clean up our local parks.””

Giving Back to ones community offers immense benefits;

Do you want to make an impact in your community? Give Back. Perhaps you do not like the way the environment looks like, consider mobilizing a neighborhood initiative to clean it up.

Do you want to improve your physical and mental health, allay stress? Give Back. The act of giving back has been shown to make one generally happy. As we volunteer our time and resources the focus is moved on from our own problems to those of others. Those people who give back report feeling happier and more satisfied with life.

Do you want to meet new people, make new friends and network? Then Give Back. Participating in community initiatives makes one meet people different from their day to day lives and enlarges ones network.

Do you want to uplift others with talent and share expertise that you have? Give Back.
Perhaps you are a talented sportsman, singer, writer, academician, cook, business professional, doctor and many more. Why not uplift others who may not ordinarily have the means to afford your services and talent and in this way upscale them?

Do you want to make your community a better place to live in in or work in? Give Back.
Perhaps you do not find your neighborhood looking as glossy as those you see in the high end magazines, why not bring people together, plant trees, grass, flowers, organize a team building activity for your colleagues or your neighbours pro bono and so forth and so on.

Do you want to hone your leadership skills? Give Back.
When you take charge in an initiative that brings people together and that leaves a positive impact you find yourself growing as a leader and as an influencer in your own society.

Do you want to learn or improve on your own skills? Give Back.
The paradox of life is that when you give to others you grow. Consider this blog, I just began by making some random posts in my WordPress, free of charge to my readers and day by day I found my personal style and voice as a lifestyle and an inspirational writer, granted I am still growing and learning but there is improvement when I look back.

Do you want to up your resume or CV? Give Back.
When you volunteer in community activities you are allowed to cite them in your CV. In this day and age employers and potential professional and business partners are looking for well rounded people.

Do you want to discover new opportunities in life? Give Back.
Many volunteer opportunities turn out into business, work and life opportunities. You just never know.

Do you want to feel good about yourself? Give Back.
Many of those who Give Back in volunteer activities report feeling contented and happy about themselves.

Finally Giving Back gives us all a chance to follow our passion in life. What sets your soul on fire? Use that as your motivation to Give Back.

In a time and era where it is mostly about me, myself and I, in the worst case scenario enriching oneself at the detriment of others perhaps it is time to reconsider, be the difference and Give Back.

Next week we begin exploring different ways that one can Give Back. A lovely weekend to all the readers of this blog,

Closed – a case for Giving Back.
